A BRIEF INTRODUCTION |
|
The
Royal Life Saving Society is a national charity established over 100 years
ago and responsible for the development and implementation of standards
for all aspects of Lifeguarding and Lifesaving, as well as being a key
player in the development of international protocols for Life Support
through the Resuscitation Council.
Through our network of county Branches, local Affiliated Clubs and
Centres, and independent Trainers and Assessors, we train EVERY lifeguard
(both pool and beach) in the country. Our outreach programmes include
"Save A Baby's Life" (targeted at the parents of new-born infants)
which you may have come across through the recent national initiative with
Tesco. As a minimum standard EVERY swimming teacher in the UK is required
to hold our RLSS NRASTC ("National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers
and Coaches") and the vast majority of EWCB Coaches hold our "Cricket
Coaches Level II Life Support" training.
Sadly,
largely as a result of coroners' courts decisions, anyone working with
swimmers with disabilities is expected to hold our "Rescue Test for
Supervisors of Swimmers with Disabilities", and anyone working near
and, especially, supervising activities in or near water is expected to
hold one of our specialised "Emergency Response" awards.
Although the competitive side is relatively under-developed within Surrey,
it is very well established within the SE Region, Nationally and
Internationally. We do hold an annual competition and interest is growing
as, I gather, competitive life-saving will be a demonstration sport at the
2012 Olympics.
In
Surrey, in a typical year, I estimate that we will see more than 500
people achieving our flagship award, the Bronze Medallion, at least 200
swimming teachers achieving the NRASTC, and around 500 lifeguards passing
their NPLQ ("National Pool Lifeguard Qualification"). Bizarrely,
life-saving is an accepted activity for the GCSE in PE, but counts as a
Service activity (rather than sport) for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
If you
feel you'd like to be involved, why not contact us now?
Best wishes

ARRANGING ASSESSMENTS |
|
ALL SENIOR LIFESAVING AWARDS
(INCL AWARD OF MERIT, DISTINCTION, NRASTC, AND
LIFE-SUPPORT 1,2 AND 3)
The trainer is
responsible for arranging an assessor directly.
You should allow a
minimum of one month's notice - remember assessors are volunteers with
busy diaries too!
If you need a current
list of Trainer Assessors click here.
If you have difficulty finding
a TA who is
available, please contact the Branch Lifesaving
Coordinators who will be glad to assist.
REMEMBER - all courses for BM/LS1 and NRASTC must be
pre-registered.
From May 2009, BM/LS
assessments can be conducted by the TA within certain constraints.
You should have received details of this change by post, direct from HQ.
If not, call the BLCs before doing anything!
