Making Surrey Safer

Lifesavers

The Royal Life-Saving Society, Surrey Branch

Help us to make Surrey a safer place - as well as water-based life-guarding, we train teachers, sports coaches, new parents, and members of the public in lifesaving rescue skills.  Our clubs and affiliated centres, prepare young people for competitions, the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards, and GCSE in PE.  PLEASE support our work by making a donation, volunteering your time, or raising funds.

Bronze Medallion and Life Support 1 (BM/LS1 combined courses)

REVISED PROCEDURE WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT (May 2008)

The process of registering a BM/LS1 course is NOT complex, but you must complete it or there is a strong possibility that your candidates' awards will be invalidated.

1

The trainer orders the candidate packs via Lifesavers Direct.

You should allow a minimum of 14 days for delivery.

NB: The Branch no longer processes orders on behalf of members.

2

The trainer should download a current BM/LS1 course registration form from the Lifesavers website.

3

The trainer arranges for an Assessor.

You should give them at least a month's notice.

You MUST not use the same assessor for three consecutive assessments.

The Assessor MUST possess a valid card of authority, be in full individual membership of the Society, hold a valid Life Support 3 award and, preferably should hold a recent Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure.  They must also have been listed by the Branch as assessors - you CANNOT bring an assessor in from another Branch without PRIOR permission.  You will find a list of Assessors by following the link on our home page.

4

The trainer uses the course registration form to register the ASSESSMENT direct with River House .

You MUST do so at least 28 days before the assessment is to take place.

You MUST include the relevant page from each candidate's pack with the registration form.

You need to know the name and society number of the ASSESSOR to do so.

5

You will receive from River House the certificates and medallions for signature by the assessor immediately after the assessment.

ARRANGING ASSESSMENTS

ALL SENIOR LIFESAVING AWARDS (INCL AWARD OF MERIT, DISTINCTION, NRASTC, AND LIFE-SUPPORT 1,2 AND 3)

The trainer is responsible for arranging an assessor directly.

You should allow a minimum of one month's notice - remember assessors are volunteers with busy diaries too!

If you need a current list of Trainer Assessors click here.

If you have difficulty finding a TA who is available, please contact the Branch Lifesaving Coordinators who will be glad to assist.

REMEMBER - all courses for BM/LS1 and NRASTC must be pre-registered.

From May 2009, BM/LS assessments can be conducted by the TA within certain constraints.  You should have received details of this change by post, direct from HQ.  If not, call the BLCs before doing anything!
