Latest update: Thursday, 11 December 2008

For the last 15 years, I've worked with the leaders of organisations, and their people, helping create a vision of what their world could be like, and then helping them to achieve it.

I believe in the enormous potential that people have and love to see them discover and tap into it in every aspect of their life.

While I am a futurist and strategist, my work has its roots in organisation development and is shaped by my training as a psychotherapist, sports coach, and minister.

Every few days I add more material either to my site or my blog.  This is always FREE and carries no advertising.  This includes summaries of books, Executive Guides that accompany my talks, reflections on media items, case studies and short essays on leadership and OD.  If you would like to be told when something new is added, just sign up to my Yahoo Group.

Please check out my presence on ecademy.com too - you can join the clubs that I lead there and join in the debate.  Each month, I hold an 'informal drink with Graham' in Oxfordshire - the next is on Monday 22nd December from 18:00 to 19:30 in The Royal Oak, on the Woodstock Road, just 200yds out from St Giles, in Oxford.  Anyone is welcome.

Emotional Literacy
I don't like the term 'emotional intelligence', or EQ, for several reasons; it is only one aspect of a more substantial area of psychology - social intelligence - that has been around since the 1920s; it is a cleverly marketed but shallow treatment of a complex subject; it implies that it can be measured and that there are therefore 'norms' to which people can be compared; and, as it was originally defined, it is highly manipulative of others. I prefer the educational psychologists' term 'emotional literacy' - which I see as a fundamental stepping stone to social intelligence. So how do we develop our emotional literacy?

Why Social Intelligence is more important than simply EQ
There’s more to success than manipulating peoples’ emotions. The science that encompasses EQ dates back to the 1920s, when EL Thorndike, used the term “social intelligence” to describe the skill of understanding and managing other people.

Developing Social Intelligence
In 1933, Vernon provided the most wide-ranging definition of social intelligence as the person's "ability to get along with people in general, social technique or ease in society, knowledge of social matters, susceptibility to stimuli from other members of a group, as well as insight into the temporary moods or underlying personality traits of strangers". In this short essay, I look at ways in which social intelligence can be observed and how to develop it.

A few kind words from my clients

"I don't think you really know what an impact you have!" JS, HRD

"Profound. Almost taught me too much!" TY, MD

"I would gladly give you a reference any time. Our 'chats' were on the mark every time. Your observations astute. And, even when I put you on the spot, I knew I could trust you." DF, CE

"You're a one, you really are! A real challenge at times - and it was tough, but what an outcome. And I'm sure we've not stopped yet." MS, CE

"Your way of looking at things, and way of feeding them back, baffles me. You manage to make me aware of home truths, but I feel encouraged at the same time." PW, MD

"At the time, we did some really good work together. You brought vision and insight, and helped me challenge myself. But the real impact is happening now. Quite simply my life and relationships are totally different." RM, CEO

"I was ready to give up. Frankly, I had. I never expected to look back after five years and see how much more I could achieve and how my life has unfolded." JT, TD

"A friend. But one who doesn't get angry when things don't go the way you know they could, but instead is there to keep things gently moving forwards." BS, S
